ARD, ZDF pick up Euro 2020 rights

German public-service broadcasters ARD and ZDF have acquired rights for the Uefa Euro 2020 national team football tournament.

The deal was brokered by SportA, the agency that represents the broadcasters, with Uefa, football’s European governing body.

The agreement covers television and digital platforms, as well as radio rights.

ARD’s head of sports rights, Ulrich Wilhelm, said that it would be a “real challenge” to cover the tournament, which will break with the tradition of being hosted in one or two countries by taking place across 13 different countries in June and July 2020.

He added that ARD would work closely with ZDF to ensure a “cost-conscious” approach is adopted to the coverage.
