Baku 2015 signs first Asian rights deal

Japanese commercial broadcaster Tokyo Broadcasting System has become the first Asian broadcaster to acquire rights for the Baku 2015 European Games multi-sport event.

The rights package includes all 17 days of competition as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

TBS will also broadcast highlights packages across all of its domestic platforms in Japan.

Charlie Wijeratna, commercial director of Baku 2015, added: “This is the first deal we have announced with an Asian broadcaster and represents a significant step in achieving our aim of ensuring the inaugural European Games is broadcast in all five continents around the world.”

The agreement comes after Baku 2015 yesterday (Tuesday) also struck a rights deal with French digital-terrestrial television channel L’Equipe 21.
