British and Irish horse racing in Cypriot betting rights deal

GBI Racing, a joint-venture between the Racecourse Media Group and At the Races, which distributes the international betting rights for British and Irish horse racing, has agreed a deal with the Nicosia Racing Club in Cyprus for live coverage in betting shops across the island.

The deal was agreed following the passing of a new law by the Cypriot government which allows the NRC to take bets on all overseas racing.

The GBI Racing channel will be broadcast in betting shops alongside Cypriot domestic racing, and racing from South Africa.

Richard Brooke, chairman of GBI Racing, said: “We are delighted to welcome Cyprus to the GBI Racing group. The international marketplace is becoming increasingly competitive so Cyprus’s recognition of British and Irish horseracing as a respected and reputable product – which delivers a consistent schedule of high-quality content – is another ringing endorsement.”

Brooke added: “We launched on Monday and early indications show there is a strong appetite for GBI Racing and expectations are high that Cyprus will perform as one of our top five Tote [betting] customers worldwide. This comes as no surprise given the Cypriot customers’ knowledge and passion for our racing, which has been very evident since our first dealings with the NRC.”
