BSkyB has power to veto Premier League fixture plan

The English Premier League may be forced to alter its plan to delay its penultimate set of games by 24 hours, if pay-television broadcaster BSkyB demands it.

The entire Premier League programme for Saturday May 5 has been moved to May 6 to avoid clashing with the FA Cup final, the showpiece game of English football’s leading knockout competition.

However, BBC Sport reported that the Premier League’s contract with its main television rights-holder allows BSkyB to televise a Premier League game on Saturday lunchtime if it chooses. The Premier League may also be forced to move games if a team reaches the final of the Uefa Europa League, which takes place on May 9.

The 2011 FA Cup final was played on the same day as four Premier League matches, including Manchester United’s title-winning draw at Blackburn Rovers.
