Bundesliga finds home in Iceland

Icelandic free-to-air broadcaster SportTV has acquired exclusive rights in the country to the top two divisions of German football.

Under the deal with the Bundesliga International division of the German Football League (DFL), SportTV will broadcast the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga for the remainder of the current season, as well as the 2019-20 and 2020-21 campaigns.

Bundesliga International said that by granting SportTV exclusive audio-visual rights, the Bundesliga will be the broadcaster’s lead property. SportTV will commence its coverage with Friday’s meeting between TSG Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich, the first match following the Bundesliga’s winter break.

SportTV chief executive, Sigmundur Lárusson, said: “We will, for the next two and half years, provide vast coverage each weekend by offering the fans five to six live games per round and together with the Bundesliga strive to develop its footprint in Iceland.”

Iceland national team star Alfreð Finnbogason is FC Augsburg’s all-time Bundesliga top scorer.
