Discovery, Eurosport unveil ‘official mobile broadcaster’ opportunity

International media and entertainment company Discovery Communications and its pan-European sports broadcaster, Eurosport, have unveiled a new partnership opportunity for mobile operators to deliver content from the Olympic Games.

Providers that obtain the ‘official mobile broadcaster’ designation will be able to offer their customers access to coverage before, during and after the Games, including real-time highlights and on-demand content.

The new service can be customised with an operator-branded channel that will be available on a rolling basis.

In June 2015, Discovery and Eurosport acquired television and multi-platform rights in various European markets for four editions of the Olympic Games, from 2018 to 2024, for €1.3bn.

Confirmation of the launch comes after Eurosport Player, the streaming service operated by Eurosport, broke another monthly subscriber record in January.

Jean-Briac Perrette, president and chief executive of Discovery Networks International, said: “Sports are particularly powerful in a mobile environment as we are witnessing with the growth of our direct-to-consumer sports streaming service, Eurosport Player.”
