The European Broadcasting Union has acquired rights to the Women’s Euro 21 tournament as well as various Youth and futsal competitions until the end of the 2021-22 season, SportBusiness Media understands.
The deal, which began this season, does not include the UK, France or Germany, but covers most of the rest of Europe.
Under the agreement, EBU will take on production responsibilities for the component competitions apart from the Women’s Euros and the Under-21 Championships.
Uefa, European football’s governing body, will also be able to show the competitions live on its recently-launched free-to-air OTT streaming platform, UEFA.tv, except for the Women’s Euros and Under-21 Championships.
EBU agreed the deal with the CAA Eleven agency, which sells the rights on behalf of Uefa.
Public broadcaster TVE will exploit the rights in Spain to Euro 21 as part of the EBU deal.
CAA and Uefa have sold rights in the UK to Euro 21 to public broadcaster the BBC, and are in the process of selecting a broadcast partner in France, where the value of the rights is expected to more than double.
Negotiations for the rights in Germany remain ongoing, SportBusiness Media understands.
The Women’s Euro 21 tournament will take place in England from July 11 to August 1.
