EBU re-elects president Philippot

Jean-Paul Philippot has been re-elected as the president of the European Broadcasting Union, the consortium of public-service broadcasters announced this (Friday) morning.

The re-election of Philippot, who has served as administrator general of Belgian public-service broadcaster RTBF since 2002, was confirmed at the EBU’s general assembly in Becici, Montenegro.

Philippot will serve a fifth consecutive two-year term at the helm, through to 2018. He has served in the role since 2009.

Monica Maggioni, the president of Italian state broadcaster Rai, was also re-elected for a further two-year term as EBU vice-president. She has served in the role since 2015.

The EBU negotiates rights deals for a variety of sports properties on behalf of its members across the continent. Last month, the EBU sealed a new four-year rights deal, from 2018-19 to 2021-22, for rights to events operated by the International Biathlon Union.
