Eurosport acquires time-shifted Euro 2012 rights

Pan-European broadcaster Eurosport acquired rights to show all 31 matches from the Uefa Euro 2012 national team tournament on a delayed or “time-shifted” basis across the continent.

Eurosport will be able to show each game, but no earlier than 24 hours after the match has taken place.

Eurosport said that the coverage would be available in 58 countries via its main channel and Eurosport 2, and added that delayed broadcasts of selected matches would be repeated.

To support the match coverage, Eurosport will broadcast Euro 2012 Show, a daily 30-minute update programme, at 8pm CET for the duration of the event, which is being co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine and will run from June 8 to July 1.

Eurosport’s international division has reported a 17.3-per-cent fall in advertising revenue to €11 million ($14.3 million) in the first quarter of 2012.

Eurosport International said that the cost of covering the Africa Cup of Nations football tournament earlier this year had contributed to a €4.7 million fall in operating profits to €3.5 million for the quarter, according to the Broadband TV News website.

Continued growth in subscription revenue helped overall turnover to increase by 1.3 per cent to €85.6 million for the quarter.
