Genius adds Singapore volleyball to live streaming portfolio

Sports data and technology company Genius Sports has agreed a live streaming deal with the Volleyball Association of Singapore.

VAS, the national governing body of the sport, has engaged Genius Sports to launch its first live streaming strategy through GeniusLive, which automates streaming, production and distribution.

Under the deal, VAS will be able to live stream every play of the first ever annual national volleyball competition in Singapore. The GeniusLive Reporter Camera will enable the VAS to capture behind-the-scenes footage to complement each stream including team huddles, player interviews and press conferences.

Genius Sports will also provide its scoring, competition management and performance scouting solutions. All live streams, team and player statistics will be published across the VAS’ new microsite.

Thomas Klingebiel, commercial director for Asia at Genius Sports, added: “With sports facing an immediate future behind closed doors, automated streaming solutions like GeniusLive can provide a vital lifeline to leagues and federations at every level. The VAS will be able to showcase its competitions to volleyball fans and sponsors globally while implementing proven data technology solutions.”

In December, Genius Sports told SportBusiness that it was targeting “underserved” and “long-tail” sports with its new streaming production and betting streaming offering.

Having established itself in sports through its data and rights-holder integrity partnerships, Genius announced in October the launch of GeniusLive on the back of the acquisition of Belgium-based streaming and performance analysis company Oppia Performance.

The Dutch Basketball League was one of the first rights-holders to work with Genius Sports in the live streaming area. GeniusLive also provides its technology to the French Volleyball League (LNV), Belgium’s EuroMillions Volley League, and the volleyball federations in the Czech Republic and Portugal.

The VAS agreement comes after Genius Sports in February struck a data deal with the Football Association of Singapore. Genius Sports is gathering team and player statistics pitchside at all Singapore Premier League games.

It has data deals in Asia with rights-holders including the Asian Football Confederation, the Asian Volleyball Confederation and the Philippines Basketball Association. In January, it announced an extension of its deal with the Philippine SuperLiga (PSL), under which it is providing a live streaming platform for the club volleyball competition, its first such deal in Asia.
