GML deal grants new home for Fifa rights in Trinidad & Tobago

Pan-regional pay-television broadcaster DirecTV has agreed a three-year deal to sublicense exclusive free-to-air rights to Fifa football competitions in Trinidad & Tobago.

Under the deal between DirecTV Caribbean and Trinidadian company Guardian Media Limited, the latter’s CNC3 channel will be able to broadcast Fifa events through to 2018.

This portfolio of rights includes the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the forthcoming 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada, the 2017 Confederations Cup and all Fifa Under-17 and Under-20 World Cup matches.

GML managing director Lisa Agard said: “This solidifies our intention to be a major player in sports entertainment. We are pleased to give football and Fifa a new home in T&T and we plan to serve the public well.”

DirecTV in December acquired exclusive rights in the Caribbean for events operated by Fifa, football’s global governing body. The deal, which covers all media platforms, will run for eight years, from 2015 to 2022.
