Michigan State switches strategy with Fox Sports partnership

The Fox Sports division of US network Fox has signed a multimedia rights deal with the athletics division of Michigan State University.

The contract will run for 15 years, from the 2016-17 to 2030-31 academic years, and is worth a guaranteed sum of more than $150m (€133m).

Fox Sports will acquire marketing and corporate partnership rights associated with all 25 varsity sports programmes at Michigan State.

Fox Sports College Properties, a division of Fox-owned Home Team Sports, will manage the rights that include television programming, digital and social media integration, in-venue signage, promotional and experiential activities, as well as intellectual property rights and official designations.

Michigan State had been the last school in the five major US conferences to manage its rights in-house.

Mark Hollis, athletics director at Michigan State, said: “Now is the right time and Fox Sports is the right partner for Michigan State. Fox Sports can focus on building the Michigan State brand and leverage synergies with the Fox Sports family of networks, including Fox Sports Detroit and BTN.

“The increased revenue will help Michigan State address the growing expenditures related to enhancing the student-athlete experience, including scholarships, cost of attendance, academic support, team travel, athletic training and medical services.”

Fox Sports’ multimedia rights portfolio already includes the Auburn, Southern California, Georgetown and Villanova universities, as well as the Big East Conference intercollegiate division.
