NBC Sports Group takes EPL to the movies

The NBC Sports Group division of US media company NBCUniversal has struck a deal with Fathom Events, a company that shows unique entertainment events in movie theatres, to show live English Premier League football matches in cinemas during the upcoming 2014-15 season.

The Barclays Premier League Live service will begin on August 16, with Fathom providing state-of-the-art projection and sound at selected venues across the country.

Fathom and NBC Sports Group said that the top games featuring the top teams would be selected for the coverage.

NBC Sports Group has the rights for the Premier League in the US.

“It’s clear from the recent nationwide outpouring of support for team USA in the World Cup that more and more Americans are embracing and following this remarkable sport,” Fathom Events chief executive John Rubey said. “In this ‘first-ever’ cinema sports series partnership with NBC Sports Group, fans in theatres can expect to get the full Barclays Premier League experience as though they were at one of the famed stadiums in the United Kingdom.”
