NWHL signs up new rights partner

US ice hockey competition the National Women’s Hockey League has agreed a rights deal for its second season with live and on demand video news network Cheddar.

Cheddar is available via over-the-top platform Sling TV, along with Amazon, Twitter and Facebook Live. It will air NWHL weekend games for the remainder of the 2016-17 regular season, starting with Sunday’s encounter between the Buffalo Beauts and defending Isobel Cup champion Boston Pride.

In addition to coverage on Cheddar, NWHL games will continue to be streamed live via nwhl.zone/video.

"This is a big step in the evolution of the National Women’s Hockey League and great news for our fans,” NWHL commissioner Dani Rylan said. “This deal with our partners at Cheddar places our games on a popular network with broad reach and scale and meets the goals of our digital growth strategy for the league.”

Cheddar chief executive Jon Steinberg added: “There is a long history of business news channels broadcasting sports on the weekend, and we are excited to take this to a new level with one of the most exciting and fast paced professional sports.”
