Portugal Telecom set to return as Sport TV shareholder

Telecommunications company Portugal Telecom is in talks to buy a stake in Portuguese pay-television broadcaster Sport TV.

Portugal Telecom is negotiating with Zon Multimedia and Sportinveste, which jointly own the broadcaster, according to the Economico website.

Portugal Telecom wants to acquire about 25 per cent of Sport TV. Market analysts say such a stake would be valued at more than €100 million ($123 million).

Portugal Telecom owned a stake in Sport TV through its PT Multimédia arm until 2007, when the division was spun off by the parent company and became Zon Multimedia.

Sport TV operates sports channels in Portugal and Portuguese-language African markets.
