Premier League signs up new rights partners in Germany, Portugal

Digital sports media company Perform has acquired exclusive rights for the English Premier League in Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein, while Portuguese pay-television broadcaster Sport TV has been awarded rights for the top division of football in England.

Both deals will cover three seasons, from 2016-17 to 2018-19.

Perform, which has dislodged pay-television broadcaster Sky Deutschland as the rights-holder in Germany, also acquired non-exclusive rights in Switzerland and Luxembourg and clips rights across those two countries and Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein.

“It [the Premier League] is an exciting addition to our already extensive portfolio of exclusive live and on-demand content on our upcoming OTT offering,” Perform OTT chief commercial officer John Gleasure said. “We will continue to add a range of both international and local rights to the service before our 2016 launch, and look forward to announcing further acquisitions in the very near future.”

Sport TV will show live coverage, highlights and internet clips in Portugal, Azores and Madeira, according to the Económica news website.

Sport TV will replace BTV as the league’s rights-holder in Portugal. BTV, the pay-television channel that is operated by Benfica, the most popular football club in the country, secured rights in the current cycle in March 2013 covering three seasons, from 2013-14 to 2015-16.
