Rights-holders’ offices searched as Serie A rights probe launched

The offices of Italian media company Mediaset and pay-television broadcaster Sky Italia were searched by police on Tuesday as part of an investigation into the sale of media rights for Serie A, the top division of football in the country.

Police also searched the offices of the Italian football league, Lega Serie A, and the Infront Sports & Media agency, which is the league’s exclusive adviser for the national and international media rights, according to the Reuters news agency.

Italy’s competition watchdog, the Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato, is also part of the investigation, the report added.

Last July, Agcom, Italy’s communications regulator, approved sublicensing deals between Sky Italia and Mediaset Premium’s parent company RTI for domestic Serie A coverage over three years, from 2015-16 to 2017-18.
