Russia’s VKontakte builds football rights portfolio

Russian social media and video-hosting platform VKontakte has acquired rights to the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch club football, and the Championship, the second tier of the English game.

The length of the deals was not disclosed, but they commenced with the weekend’s games.

VKontakte broadcast two Championship games on Saturday – Derby County’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham City and Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest.

It then showed two games from the Eredivisie on Sunday – PSV Eindhoven’s 7-1 win at FC Utrecht and Ajax’s 2-1 home defeat against Vitesse.

VKontakte has also been live streaming games from Spain’s LaLiga this season.
