German pay-television broadcaster Sky Deutschland has commenced sending sports clips via mobile messaging service WhatsApp, while it has launched a high-definition version of its Sky Sport Austria channel.
Sky has opened the WhatsApp service up to subscribers and non-subscribers, with registered users receiving clips from the Sky Sports News HD channel.
Sky claims the service has gained around 20,000 users in its first week of operation. Stefan Weinhauser, head of internet product management at Sky Deutschland, said: “With our new, innovative news service via WhatsApp we offer breaking news and the top sports news of the day as quickly and readily available as possible – and it's free for all who are interested.”
Meanwhile, Sky Sport Austria HD will be available to Sky Deutschland customers in the country who subscribe to its sports package and premium HD option.
