Spanish Court orders regional channel to compensate Mediapro for Liga rights

A Spanish court has ruled that regional channel Televisió de les Illes Balears must pay Spanish agency Mediapro more than €5.3 million ($7 million) in compensation for non-payment of rights fees for Spanish Liga football.

A court of first instance in Barcelona found Televisió de les Illes Balears, the regional broadcaster for the Balearic Islands, guilty of not fulfilling its contractual obligations with Mediapro. The contract covered the 2010-11 season and part of the 2011-12 season.

The agency had filed a lawsuit against Televisió de les Illes Balears worth €5.217 million for the Liga rights and €142,820 in interest costs. The channel will also be responsible for paying Mediapro’s legal costs.
