Sports fans shifting to mobile devices, survey says

Sports fans are increasingly turning to mobile devices to consume sports content, according to the Global Sports Media Consumption Report 2012.

The report – based on a survey of sports fans in Great Britain, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the US, Brazil, China, Australia and Russia – shows that the number of sports fans who say they consume sport on a mobile device is increasing across the globe.

In the US, the growth of mobile devices to consume sport has increased from one fifth of fans in 2011 to a third of sports fans this year. In China, approximately two thirds of sports fans now claim to use a mobile device to follow sport, equating to approximately 166 million people. The proportion of sports fans in Great Britain who use a mobile device to follow sport rose from 21 per cent in 2011 to 28 per cent this year. In Spain the figure rose from 20 to 28 per cent. Growth rates were lower in the other markets.

The Global Sports Media Consumption Report 2012 will be published this month by Perform, KantarSport and TV Sports Markets.
