State of Origin opener draws 1.8m viewers to Nine

The opening match of this year’s State of Origin rugby league representative series drew 1.8 million viewers across Australia’s five biggest cities to free-to-air channel Nine, according to overnight television ratings.

In addition, pre-match coverage of yesterday’s (Wednesday’s) fixture attracted 983,000 metropolitan viewers to the Nine Entertainment-owned channel. The post-match coverage, meanwhile, drew 634,000 viewers.
