SuperSport picks up super-fight rights in Africa

SuperSport, the pay-television broadcaster that operates in Sub-Saharan Africa, has acquired rights for the upcoming boxing clash between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

Live coverage of the world welterweight bout next month in Las Vegas will be shown on the SuperSport 2 channel in South Africa and the SS2 and SS6 HD channels in the rest of the continent.

The deal, which was agreed between SuperSport and the Mayweather Promotions and Top Rank boxing promotional companies, covers all platforms in 44 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The coverage will be available via SuperSport’s DStv Premium package for no extra fee.

Under the agreement, SuperSport will show plenty of support programming, including one-on-one interviews with the two fighters, in the build-up to the main contest, which will be broadcast live in the early hours of May 3 in Africa.

Since 2001, SuperSport has broadcast 21 of Mayweather’s fights and 19 of Pacquiao’s contests.
