The Sun to launch online football news programme

UK newspaper The Sun is to launch a football news programme as part of a move into the online football market.

Subscribing to The Sun FC programme will allow customers to access a Goals application to view clips from the English Premier League, in addition to the news service.

The Sun said that the daily sports news programme would be “near live” and available on demand.

Derek Brown, digital editor, said the programme will be a part of a three-pronged "Sun Plus" digital strategy, including access to the newspaper’s website through smartphones and tablets.

The Goals app will exploit the digital rights parent company publisher News UK acquired for the Premier League and FA Cup competitions, as well as England matches. News UK’s deal for near-live clips of the FA Cup games, FA Community Shield matches and 14 England senior friendly matches will run for four seasons, from 2014-15 to 2017-18. In January, News UK announced it had secured rights to show Premier League clips as part of a three-year deal spanning the 2013-14 to 2015-16 campaigns.
