TVE emerges as favourite for Uefa qualifier rights

Spanish public-service broadcaster TVE is in pole position to acquire media rights for European qualifiers for the Uefa Euro 2016 and 2018 Fifa World Cup national team football tournaments, according to newspaper El Mundo.

The report said that TVE is in “advanced talks” to acquire the rights for about €50m ($70m).

The broadcaster, which is bidding against commercial broadcasters Telecinco and Antena 3, would exploit the rights on the La1 channel. The offers from the other bidders are considerably below TVE’s bid, the report added.

The CAA Eleven agency launched an invitation to tender for the rights in January, and gave broadcasters until February 20 to submit their bids.

CAA Eleven is operating on behalf of Uefa, football’s European governing body.
