Ugandan football hails new era with Sports Broadcasting deal

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations has agreed a four-year media and commercial rights deal with local sports production and marketing company Sports Broadcasting – an agreement it states will be transformational for the sport in the country.

The contract will run from June 1, 2018 to July 31, 2022 and has been valued at $3m (€2.45m). It encompasses commercial and media rights for club competitions the Uganda Premier League, FUFA Big League and FUFA Uganda Cup.

FUFA said further details behind the deal will be revealed in the near future, but it will mean all 240 games across a Premier League season will be broadcast live.

FUFA said in a statement: “It is anticipated that in the years to come, this innovation will change the way Ugandans view and consume not just football but Ugandan sport in general.”

FUFA president, Moses Magogo, added: “Using the lessons from the previous failed attempt to professionalise club football, FUFA has constructed solid governance for club football and enforced the club licensing.

“Combined with the education of the technical and administrative human resource, professionalism is being entrenched at all levels. This has given birth to commercialisation which will yield more resources for the betterment of our game. What we are witnessing today is a new dawn and the beginning of an avalanche of sponsors to football.”
