Indian sports and entertainment pay-television channel Sony Six has secured the exclusive broadcast rights for the Australian Open tennis tournament in India under a five-year deal spanning 2015 to 2019.
The Australian Open marks Sony Six’s first deal to broadcast one of tennis’ grand slam tournaments, with the channel having previously shown selected tournaments from the men’s ATP Tour.
Prasana Krishnan, head of business at Sony Six, said: “This acquisition signifies another endeavour by Sony Six into bringing diverse sports offerings for its viewers. The Australian Open is seen as the paramount opener to the grand slam competitions and we are proud to have this prestigious event in our bouquet of international sports content.”
The Australian Open is staged at Melbourne Park over the last fortnight of January and is the first of four annual grand slam tournaments, paving the way for the French Open, the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open
