E-commerce and media company Amazon has held talks with the US major leagues over the possibility of streaming live coverage of sport, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The newspaper said that Amazon has suggested to some properties that it could create a premium sports package as part of its Amazon Prime subscription service.
Amazon has also considered cricket rights and asked media companies, such as Disney and Univision, about rights to games that they opt not to show.
The CNBC business news website added that Amazon has been interested in American football’s NFL “for some time” and had lodged a bid for the online rights that were awarded to Yahoo and Twitter ahead of the start of the 2016-17 season.
Earlier this year Amazon said that it planned to double its expenditure on video content and triple its spending on original content in the second half of 2016.
