US technology company Apple has said it will bring live sports to its digital media player and microconsole service, Apple TV.
Apple made the announcement as part of its product launch event yesterday (Tuesday) for the new versions of the iPhone. As part of the event, Apple TV 4K was unveiled, bringing 4K and HDR content to the service.
Although Apple did not reveal precise details behind its live sports plans, it said in a statement: “Later this year, the TV app is making it easier than ever to watch and get updates about live sports just by saying ‘Watch the (Golden State) Warriors game’ or ‘What’s the score of the (Chicago) Cubs game?’
“Sports fans in the US will be able to track their favourite teams and get on-screen notifications whenever they are playing, as well as see all the teams, leagues and sporting events currently playing through a dedicated sports tab.”
Apple noted that live sports content would be subject to local blackout restrictions.
Apple added that starting this month, its TV app will be available in Australia and Canada, in addition to the US. By the end of the year, it will expand to France, Germany, Norway, Sweden and the UK.
