Public-service broadcaster Botswana Television (BTV) has agreed a deal with the Botswana Football Association governing body for the exclusive rights to the Botswana Premier League top tier, according to the Botswana Gazette newspaper.
The deal, which will cover the 2013-14 season, is said to be worth P6m (€535,000/$700,000).
The announcement will end sub-Saharan African pay-television broadcaster SuperSport’s hopes of acquiring the rights, the report said.
SuperSport initially agreed a deal with the association, but did not finalise the agreement due to a dispute over the terms of a sublicensing clause with BTV which would have allowed for some of the games to be broadcast on free-to-air television. The newspaper said that SuperSport insisted that its logo should appear on BTV’s coverage, but the demand was rejected by the public-service broadcaster.
