De La Hoya launches Spanish-language sports channel

Boxing promoter and former multiple world champion Oscar De La Hoya will launch an eponymous Spanish-language sports and lifestyle cable television channel.

De La Hoya TV will feature news, analysis and original programming on combat sports including boxing and mixed martial arts, although there are no plans for the channel to include live sports programming.

In an announcement at the National Association of Television Program Executives annual conference in Miami it was confirmed De La Hoya (pictured) would collaborate with businessman and boxing promoter José Alberto "Pepe" Gómez, and media executive and Fashion TV Latin America partner Victor Hugo Montero.

De La Hoya is the channel’s chairman, with Gomez and Montero serving as executive chairman and chief executive respectively.

“In my decades of working in television, I've seen few opportunities to connect with an untapped market with such an exponential opportunity for growth,” Montero said.

The multiplatform network will launch in the spring of 2015 for cable and satellite distribution from its Miami base, while there are plans to add English language content in the future.
