US pay-television operator DirecTV has launched an application, Big Knockout Boxing VR, that allows users to watch a boxing event in virtual reality from a ringside seat.
The application provides virtual reality highlights from a June 27 fight card in Las Vegas, US.
The app is available for Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition headsets and Google Cardboard headsets with Android and iOS devices. DirecTV is also making the event available through Samsung’s Milk VR service.
Jon Molod, vice-president of digital entertainment products at DirecTV, said: “We believe that much of VR's growth will be mobile-driven. As the technology evolves we hope to find new ways to use VR to enhance not just BKB, but all sports experiences.”
Last month, Portuguese media company NOS joined forces with domestic pay-television broadcaster Sport TV and Korean electronics company Samsung to broadcast a match from Portugal’s Primeira Liga top-tier football club competition in virtual reality.
