International sports broadcaster Eurosport has reached an agreement with Sportdeutschland.tv, the online sports channel of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), to provide free-to-air coverage of the domestic Handball Bundesliga Frauen (HBF).
It will mark the first time that the women’s competition has received live free-to-air coverage. The deal will cover the 2019-20 season.
Eurosport will provide coverage of selected Friday matches as part of the agreement with Sportdeutschland.tv, whose Handball-Deutschland.TV channel has covered all games of the league since the start of the 2016-17 season.
The agreement gets underway on December 27 with the match between Frisch Auf Göppingen and TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Christoph Wendt, the league’s managing director, said: “Our long-term goal has always been to be able to present the Handball Bundesliga Frauen on free-to-air television, so working with such a renowned sports channel as Eurosport is a great milestone for women’s handball in Germany. This is a very important step in the further development and professionalisation of our league.”
