Pan-regional sports broadcaster Eurosport has acquired exclusive media rights in Romania for English football’s top-tier Premier League.
The deal will run for two-and-a-half years, covering the remainder of the 2013-14 season plus the 2014-15 and 2015-16 campaigns.
Under the agreement, the Romanian version of Eurosport will broadcast live Premier League games on every match day, starting with this weekend’s round of games. The coverage will also feature extensive highlights of all league action.
Eurosport has also acquired all internet and mobile rights for the Premier League in Romania. Fans in the eastern European country will be able to watch live matches through Eurosport Player, the broadcaster’s online streaming service, on PC, mobile, tablets and connected televisions.
“Eurosport has invested in Premier League broadcasting rights in the past and we are extremely pleased to be working with them again,” Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said. “It has an excellent track record in sports broadcasting and I am sure it will deliver a premium offering that will showcase the Premier League to football fans in Romania.”
The Multimedia Sports agency (MMS) in February acquired the Premier League’s media rights in Romania from 2013-14 to 2015-16, only for the rights to be handed back to the league. The Spanish-based company beat several other bidders, including leading Romanian pay-television broadcasters RCS-RDS and Romtelecom, to acquire the rights.
