Fifa confirms late Russian rights deal for Confederations Cup

Fifa confirmed yesterday (Sunday) that football’s global governing body had awarded rights for the 2017 Confederations Cup to the 2SPORT2 consortium, which includes Russian broadcasters Channel One, VGTRK and Match TV.

The award of the rights, which was first reported by TV Sports Markets on Friday, was confirmed just six days before the start of the national team tournament, which is taking place in Russia.

The rights cover television, internet and mobile coverage, with Channel One, VGTRK and Match TV to share live coverage of all matches.

The Associated Press news agency said Fifa wanted to bundle the rights deal with coverage of the 2018 World Cup, which is also taking place in Russia. However, the broadcasters reportedly refused to pay the asking price for the rights.
