Canadian communications and media company Rogers has unveiled a raft of NHL games it will broadcast in 4K ultra-high definition, marking a first for the North American ice hockey league.
Rogers will air 20 4K games in 2016 via its pay-television broadcaster Sportsnet. Toronto Maple Leafs’ clash with the Montreal Canadiens will become the first-ever NHL game to be broadcast using the technology when featured on the Sportsnet-produced Hockey Night in Canada broadcast on January 23.
The announcement comes after Rogers last week delivered the first-ever 4K public broadcast of an NBA basketball game. It teamed up with UK pay-television broadcaster BT Sport to air the NBA Global Games fixture between the Orlando Magic and the Toronto Raptors, which was staged at London’s O2 Arena on January 14.
“We’re investing in technology and content to build the best possible 4K TV experience for our customers,” Dirk Woessner, president of Rogers’ consumer business unit, said. “With a growing line-up of live events and original productions, we’re working to brighten every screen with premium 4K content.”
