Somali football makes broadcast ‘breakthrough’

State-owned broadcaster Somali National Television (SNTV) is to broadcast live coverage of a football match in the country for the first time.

SNTV will broadcast the General Da'ud Cup final match between Somali military team Horseed and Somali police Football Club Heegan FC today (Thursday).

The Somali Football Federation stages the club knockout competition every year in remembrance of General Da'ud Abdulle Hers, the founder of Somalia’s armed forces.

Abdiqani Said Arab, president of the Somali Football Federation, said that the broadcast represents a “breakthrough” for live, televised sports in the country.

“This will be a test, but if we are successful in this endeavour, we will try to get our matches go live in the months to come,” he said.
