Univision to televise Mexico’s fight for World Cup qualification

Spanish-language broadcaster Univision has secured the US rights to the Mexico national football team’s crucial Fifa World Cup play-off fixtures against New Zealand later this month.

The Multichannel News website said that Univision would broadcast the November 13 game from Mexico City and the return leg in Wellington one week later.

The winner of the play-off will secure a place at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil. Mexico has only failed to reach the tournament on one occasion since 1990.

US sports broadcaster ESPN, which has a partnership with Univision for Mexico national team football coverage, will show both games in English.

Telemundo, owned by US media company NBCUniversal, has secured the Spanish-language rights to the 2018 and 2022 World Cup cycle, with its deal beginning with the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
