German pay-television broadcaster Sky Deutschland has launched a new digital platform that will have an emphasis on “high-quality” video content.
The launch of skysport.de has been timed to tie in with the start of the Wimbledon tennis championships, which Sky holds the German rights to.
Sky said the new platform will include clips from its exclusive sports rights portfolio, including football’s Bundesliga and Uefa Champions League, and the Handball Bundesliga. The Sky Sport News HD channel, which went free-to-air in Germany in December, will also be livestreamed through the platform with all content being provided free of charge.
Like Sky Sport News HD, skysport.de will be financed by advertising. Thomas Deissenberger, managing director of Sky Media, said: “From the point of view of marketing this is an important step for Sky. We extend through skysport.de the range of advertising opportunities for our partners in a top sports environment and create a platform for completely new creative and integrative forms of advertising.”
