Social media website Twitter has confirmed that its video-sharing service, Vine, will be relaunched as a camera application on January 17.
The app has been popular with sports properties and clubs, which have offered clips of action on the field or behind-the-scenes snippets.
Vine will become Vine Camera – an app that will allow users to make looping videos that are 6.5 seconds long and can be posted to Twitter.
The existing Vine website will become a portal for an archive of Vines that were created through the app.
Last year Twitter integrated video-sharing directly into its main mobile apps and has started streaming coverage of Thursday night NFL American football games this season.
