World Series Hockey strikes YouTube deal

India’s World Series Hockey agreed a deal to provide live streaming of the remainder of its inaugural event on video-sharing platform YouTube.

YouTube will now stream live via an official series channel the remaining six matches including the semi-finals and final, which are scheduled to be played on April 1 and 2. To complement the live action the channel will also show highlights of the tournament.

Yannick Colaco, chief operating officer of Nimbus Sport, said the agreement with YouTube added to the “many firsts” the series has set. “The response on the online space is extremely overwhelming and we’re excited to take this fantastic tournament to hockey fans across the globe,” he said.

The series commenced on February 29. It features eight franchise teams and a total of 59 matches. It is a joint initiative between Asian sports broadcaster Nimbus Sport, a subsidiary of the Nimbus Communications agency, and the Indian Hockey Federation which organises the tournament but is not the sport’s governing body.

The Indian Hockey Federation is not recognised by the International Hockey Federation. The country’s official governing body is Hockey India, which previously told Indian players that they would not be considered for the national team should they participate in the series.
