Australian A-League football clubs can expect their media rights income to increase by 80 per cent in the next cycle, Frank Lowy, chairman of the Football Federation Australia, the league’s rights-holder, said.
“The FFA [currently] gives the clubs A$1.25 million a year from the broadcast rights,” Lowy said. “I am confident when the new deal is struck that we will be able to provide funding to cover, or close to covering, the salary cap of the clubs.” The current salary cap is A$2.25 million per club per year.
The federation is expected to start negotiating a new five-year domestic deal, from 2013-14 to 2017-18, later this year.
Pay-television operator Fox Sports currently has the exclusive rights for all A-League and national team matches in a seven-year deal, from 2006-07 to 2012-13.
