Belarusian state broadcaster picks up Olympics rights in Discovery deal

International media and entertainment company Discovery Communications has signed a sublicensing deal for Olympic Games rights with Belarus National State Broadcasting.

The deal will run for four years, covering the 2018 winter Games in PyeongChang, Korea, and the 2020 summer Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Belarus National State Broadcasting will show exclusive free-to-air coverage of the Games to audiences in the country.

The national broadcaster has also been granted digital rights for content shown on its various linear television channels.

In June 2015, Discovery agreed a deal with the International Olympic Committee for the exclusive multimedia rights across 50 countries and territories in Europe for the 2018 to 2024 Olympic Games cycle.

Discovery has already brokered sublicensing deals with a host of broadcasters across Europe, including Czech public-service broadcaster Ceska Televize and public-service broadcasters the BBC and NOS in the UK and the Netherlands.
