Botswana Football Association cancels domestic rights deal

The Botswana Football Association governing body has cancelled a domestic three-year rights deal, from 2011-12 to 2013-14, with television production company RP Productions, according to the Botswana Gazette newspaper.

The report said that the deal covering the Botswana Premier League top flight had been curtailed due to non-payment of rights fees.

“What is important for the league is for RP Productions to accept termination so that we can go into the market and normalise the broadcasting situation,” Premier League chief executive Bennett Mamelodi said.

RP Productions’ deal with the association was reported to be worth BWP4.2 million (€420,000/$550,000) per season, but the newspaper said that the clubs had not received any rights fee income from the agreement to date.

RP Productions planned to generate income from the rights by selling advertising around matches shown by the broadcast partner they sublicensed the rights to, public-service broadcaster Botswana TV. However, it struggled to secure advertising sales.
