US pay-television operator DirecTV has announced a strategic investment in digital sports technology company LiveClips.
The LiveClips technology platform aggregates live, post-game or archived sports feeds to provide searchable video clips of games.
LiveClips currently delivers sports highlights for DirecTV’s Sunday Ticket app service, which supports DirecTV’s Sunday Ticket out-of-market subscription package of NFL American football programming, allowing subscribers to access Sunday afternoon games broadcast by US networks CBS and Fox.
DirecTV did not disclose the value of its investment, but Tony Goncalves, senior vice-president, of digital entertainment products, said: “These, and other investments, are more than financial – they are partnerships. We acquire unique capabilities to embed in our products and the ability to influence roadmaps. In turn, these companies gain access to a world-class technology team and the subscriber scale of DirecTV.”
Lewis Bakes, chairman and chief executive of LiveClips, added: “Our partnership with DirecTV provides us the opportunity to participate in the explosive growth associated with the delivery of personalised video content to the fans' device of choice.”
