Pan-regional pay-television broadcaster DirecTV has secured exclusive broadcast and naming rights to the Liga de las Americas club competition in a deal struck with basketball’s world governing body, Fiba.
DirecTV has acquired rights to the competition throughout Latin America. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but executive director of Fiba in the Americas, Alberto Garcia, said the agreement “consolidates” the Liga de las Americas until 2019.
Guillermo Barreto, director of sports programming for DirecTV PanAmericana, said: “Encouraging the development of basketball in Latin America and bringing the best of the sport to our audience in the region is very important to us and with the DirecTV Liga de las Americas we can achieve that. This competition of Fiba has been instrumental in promoting American basketball worldwide.”
Next year’s eighth edition of the competition will bring together 16 teams from nine countries across South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
