International media and entertainment company Discovery Communications has said it is in talks with social media platforms Facebook and Twitter to show programming in Europe from its sports broadcaster Eurosport, including Olympic Games content.
Discovery chief executive David Zaslav told the Bloomberg news agency that Facebook and Twitter have approached Discovery and Eurosport for deals to stream sports content.
“Facebook and Twitter are very keen to get high-quality sports rights,” Zaslav (pictured) said. “We’re talking to them because we have that Olympic content for the next decade.”
Signed in June 2015, Discovery’s agreement with the International Olympic Committee secured exclusive multimedia rights across 50 countries and territories in Europe for the 2018-2024 Olympic Games cycle.
Zaslav added that Discovery is also in talks with mobile-phone operators to air exclusive sports content. “We like our hand now and we’re becoming more broadly diversified,” he said. “We want to be more than just traditional non-fiction.”
