Euro 2012 results in spike in online video viewing

The online coverage of the Uefa Euro 2012 tournament caused a significant increase in worldwide online video viewing of sports-related content, according to new data released by mobile internet company Flash Networks.

Using data from the company’s Harmony Analytics platform, Flash Networks said there was a 210-per-cent increase in HTTP streaming (from an internet server to an internet browser) of live sports broadcasts in Europe during the tournament’s final match day. In Asia-Pacific, the increase was only 20 per cent.

These statistics were reversed for peer-to-peer streaming – without the need for a central server – with an average 123-per-cent increase in Asia-Pacific and an average 42-per-cent increase in Europe in June, the month of the competition, compared to the same timeframe during the previous month.
