Pan-European sports broadcaster Eurosport has moved to further enhance its coverage of the 2018 winter Olympic Games by stating it will provide more than 50 hours of live virtual reality action from Pyeongchang.
The Winter Olympics Eurosport VR app will be the only service in Europe for fans to access such coverage, which is provided to Eurosport by Olympic Broadcasting Services, its partner at the Games.
A wide range of sports will be available live in VR, including alpine skiing, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, short track, ski jumping, skeleton, snowboarding (big air and halfpipe), as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. Eurosport will also share full on-demand replays and daily highlights packages in VR.
Fans will be able to fully personalise their viewing experience, selecting their preferred viewing point from up to six camera positions. The VR experience will be delivered by the Intel True VR division of the US technology giant.
The app is available on iOS and Android phones from tomorrow (Thursday) and has been priced at €0.99 ($1.20).
In June 2015, Eurosport’s parent company, Discovery Communications, acquired Olympic Games rights in 50 European territories in a four-Games deal with the International Olympic Committee, from 2018 to 2024. Pyeongchang 2018 represents the first Games under this deal.
