The English Football League’s highlights rights contract is set to switch from public-service broadcaster the BBC to commercial broadcaster Channel 5, according to numerous reports.
Channel 5 is expected to confirm the acquisition of Football League content and highlights from the English League Cup competition under a three-year deal effective from the 2015-16 season.
Central to the agreement, which the Daily Mail newspaper reports to be worth £2m (€2.5m/$3.1) a year, is Channel 5’s intention to air Football League highlights in a Saturday evening prime-time slot of 9pm.
The BBC’s Football League show currently follows its Match of the Day English Premier League highlights programme, normally just before midnight.
